Melmerby is a small village with a population of around 200.
It is located on the A686 road leading from Penrith over Hartside Pass to Alston and although not officially on the C2C route many cyclists travel through the village and onto Hartside.
It is typical of many of the Eden Valley villages and comes complete with a village green which was once used for wrestling and cock fighting. It is now used by Gypsies once a year in June as they make their way to and from the world famous Appleby horse fair.
Melmerby Fell is close by and Cross fell which is the highest part of the pennines is only 3 miles away.
The famous award winning Village Bakery is worth a visit to sample some of it’s organic and special dietary ranges.
There is also a pub and restaurant and several guest houses and B&B’s are also available locally.
