Newcastle upon Tyne, a city of some 277,000 people is situated on the north bank of the River Tyne in the north east of england.
Once famous for coal and ship building these industries in recent years have experienced severe decline and closure. The city today is largely a business and cultural centre, with a particular reputation for it’s nightlife. Down on the Newcastle quayside you will find a thriving, cosmopolitan area with bars, restaurants and public spaces.
With the nearby Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Sage Music Centre linked to the quayside by an innovative tilting millenium bridge there is something for everyone.
Newcastle also boasts three large shopping centres, many fascinating museums such as The Centre for Life and The Discovery museum plus many cinemas, theatres, restaurants and bars. A trip on the sightseeing bus takes in all the city sights or for the more energetic there are guided city walking tours.
Accommodation is plentiful and Newcastle has enough variety to suit budgets of all types.
